Commissioned Carvings Reel Trout Studio Inc. accepts a very limited number of commissions per year, due to the amount of time needed to complete a custom order. A commissioned carving is a full 3 dimensional lifelike sculpture of your specific fish, or of the type of fish and size you specify; basically, any carving requested outside of our regular available series carvings. gift shop items or fish portrait option. An example of a commissioned fish would be replicating a child's first fish caught in a wood carving, in lifelike detail. Another example would be commemorating a special trophy fish that you opted to catch and release (our favorite) so that those big, beautiful fish can go pass their genes on and our future generations can have a chance at catching such bounty.
While Carvings and Fish Portraits make an ideal substitute, they are NOT taxidermy, in any way, shape or form. Our carvings are finely crafted wood sculptures, and we create patterns for the shape and painting from your photos and/or descriptions. Carvings take many hours longer to complete and require much greater care and skill to produce than any fiberglass replicas or stuffed skin mounts of dead fish. A carving is the ideal way for a catch and release angler to preserve the memory of their trophy, something not possible with a replica mount. We do reserve the right to some artistic license in the goal of creating a piece of art to last a lifetime, while maintaining the general dimensions, shape and coloration specified. A wood carving is a high quality work of art. A single fish carving may take as long as 100 hours to complete, when considering all the aspects involved from concept to completion. Another way to consider this, in angler terms: a carving is comparable to handmade bamboo fly rod, hand machined reel and silk line, as opposed to the discount store spinning rod combo pack. There is just no comparison in the quality. It's even beyond that - a carving is a unique, one of a kind, heirloom quality piece of art, created for you, of your memorable catch. Commissions are by quote ONLY. All shipping & handling is additional and can be quoted. Custom crates are built in the studio for all commissioned carvings. All carvings are wood carvings, with fully carved scales, fins, and even open mouths or gills, if preferred. Eric is specifically a cold water fish specialist, however, if you have a request for a warmwater fish or any species other than trout, salmon, char or grayling, please email us at Sales@ReelTrout.com. All commissioned carvings are 'pedestal' or carved with full scales, painting and detail on all sides, regardless if displayed on wall or pedestal mount. Bases are in addition to the cost of the commissioned fish. All of our custom ordered commissioned carvings are guaranteed for life to the original purchaser against any defect or unintentional damage. Care instructions for your carving are included with the finished piece. Return shipping and handling is the responsibility of the client. Any damaged carvings or bases need to be returned to Reel Trout Studio for repair, with the exception of large, oversized pieces (such as corporate art or installations) which may require repair on site.

Commissions are created as a custom item (one of a kind) for a specific client, and thus are often more difficult to resell if the client does not complete the purchase (rare, but it has happened). For this reason, accepted commissions require a minimum deposit, with the remainder (+ shipping & handling) paid upon pick up or prior to delivery (shipping). All carvings and bases are well protected and boxed or crated for shipping. We make our own crates to best protect the carving. Because we pride ourselves in our work and always want happy and satisfied clients, we are willing to work to create the exact piece of art the client is looking for, within reason, and with the understanding that if the client is asking for additional work beyond the original quoted scope of work, there may be additional charges. An example of added charges would be (but not limited to) recreating a display base, or adding components not originally discussed or even starting over on the carving. Refunds for deposits of work not started have a 10% processing fee. If any work has begun (concept sketches, model mock ups, or actual carving of the fish), then the deposit is non refundable. Reel Trout Studio Inc. reserves the right to waive additional charges and/or deposits or this policy at our discretion. Again, our goal is a continued clientele that are proud to display the artwork we've worked hard to create for them. If you have questions about commissioning a carving, please contact us for a quote and estimated time frame for delivery. Thank you for choosing Reel Trout Studio.
